Wingfoil Stavoren – Wingfoiling on the IJsselmeer
Do you want to go wing foiling in Stavoren and are you looking for a spot with plenty of space, strong winds, and challenging conditions? Suderstrand is located right on the IJsselmeer, on the outskirts of the Frisian town of Stavoren. This spot is known for its relatively deep water, open location, and the short waves that can form in strong winds.
At the Stavoren wingfoil spot, conditions are often a bit rougher than at popular beginner spots like Workum and Mirns. Intermediate and experienced wingfoilers in particular can enjoy long runs, speed, and small waves here. What’s more, it’s often calmer here than at other well-known wingfoil spots on the IJsselmeer.
Wingfoil Stavoren: the Suderstrand
The Suderstrand is located on the west side of Stavoren and offers direct access to the open water of the IJsselmeer. Unlike many other spots on the IJsselmeer, the water here gets deep relatively quickly. At about 30 meters from the beach, you can often no longer stand.
That makes the location less suitable for absolute beginners, but particularly appealing to wing foilers who can ride on their own. Your foil is less likely to hit the bottom, and you can ride comfortably at a relatively fast pace without having to worry about extensive shallow areas.
The open location also provides plenty of space. You can ride long stretches here and, when the wind is right, enjoy small waves and swell. For wing foilers who want to avoid the crowds in Workum or Mirns, Stavoren is an interesting alternative.
Wind Directions and Water Conditions
The best wind directions for wingfoiling in Stavoren are generally:
- South: suitable for sailing, depending on conditions.
- Southwest: a popular wind direction that can cause strong waves and chop.
- West: offers plenty of space for sailing on the open IJsselmeer.
- Northwest: can also produce interesting conditions.
In light winds, the water is usually relatively calm to slightly choppy. As soon as the wind picks up, especially from the southwest, short IJsselmeer waves form and the water can become quite rough.
For experienced wing foilers, that’s actually one of the things that makes Stavoren so appealing. You can play with the waves, use small ramps to jump, and cover longer distances. The conditions do, however, require sufficient experience with riding in deeper water.
Is Stavoren suitable for beginners?
Stavoren is primarily suitable for slightly advanced and experienced wing foilers. The water gets deep relatively quickly, so it’s not easy to stand up if you lose your balance or have trouble paddling back.
For absolute beginners, locations like Workum and Mirns are generally more accessible. There, you can stand on larger areas of water and practice the basic skills of wing foiling under calmer conditions.
Do you already have experience with wing foiling and can you launch, ride upwind, and return to your starting point on your own? Then Stavoren might actually be an excellent spot to take your skills to the next level.
Safety and Points to Keep
in Mind at
Because Suderstrand is located directly on the open IJsselmeer, it is important to be mindful of wind direction, water depth, and other water sports enthusiasts.
- The water gets deep quickly. Often, you can no longer stand even a short distance from the beach.
- Avoid offshore winds, as they can easily carry you further out onto the IJsselmeer.
- Strong, short waves can form in strong southwesterly winds.
- Watch out for rocks and breakwaters along parts of the coast.
- From May through November, swimming buoy lines with red-and-white striped posts may be in place.
- Stay well clear of these posts and respect the swimming zone.
- Wear a helmet, impact vest, and a suitable leash.
- Check the current weather forecast and preferably ride with other wing foilers.
If you’re unsure about the conditions, it’s a good idea to first ask local riders about the best starting location and any potential issues to watch out for.
