Wingfoiling is a water sport that combines elements of windsurfing, kitesurfing, and foiling. It involves using a handheld wing to harness the wind’s power and glide on a hydrofoil-equipped board.

Wingfoiling works by holding the wing at an angle to the wind to create lift. As the wing catches the wind, it propels the rider and board forward, allowing them to ride above the water’s surface on the hydrofoil.

While some water sports experience can be beneficial, wingfoiling is accessible to beginners with proper instruction and practice.

Learning times vary, but with consistent practice and instruction, many people can get on the foil within a few sessions. At that point, a whole new level of excitement starts in your life. However, wingfoil has a long learning curve. Riders may easily take over a year before they are able to turn in the air and do tricks.

Wing sizes vary from small to large, with the ideal size depending on the rider’s weight, wind conditions, and skill level.

You can buy second hand wingfoil equipment. Actually, during the learning phase it’s very smart to do so. This has to do with the fact that your learning curve is long but also steep. The different phases of learning how to wingfoil come with different types of gear. So buying second hand can be a very cost-effective way. 

The world of wingfoiling knows various brands that are well known. A couple of examples, but not all of them, are F-One, Gong, Cabrinha and GA foil.

While some boards can be used for wingfoiling, specialized wingfoil boards with hydrofoils are recommended for the best performance.

Ideal conditions include moderate and consistent winds, typically between 10 to 20 knots, and flat to slightly choppy water.

Wingfoiling can be physically demanding, especially during learning phases and in stronger winds. However, with practice, riders can optimize technique and reduce physical strain. Once you get the hang of it, and you start flying, it becomes physically demanding because you just won’t stop. Sessions of over 2 hours are no exception. But it also makes you very strong!

Wingfoil is a very good exercise for your full body. It’s a good sport to strengthen your core, your back, your arms and shoulders and your legs. It’s very important that you assume the correct stance in order to get stronger thanks to the sport and not hurt yourself, i.e. your back. Keep your back straight and do the work with your arms, shoulders and legs. 

Yes, wingfoiling can be done in waves, and it offers a unique and exhilarating experience compared to flatwater riding. 

The best way to learn how to wingfoil is in flat water, without current and in a save environment. “Safe” meaning no boats around you, no rocky shore and enough beach to walk back if you drift off with the wind. 

Always wear a leash to stay connected to the board and use a life jacket for buoyancy. Familiarize yourself with local rules and conditions, and avoid crowded areas.

Launch by laying the wing on the water and positioning it downwind. To land, bring the wing above your head and float downwind, letting the wing gently land on the water.

Inflatable boards are more portable and forgiving, while rigid boards offer better performance and response.

Using a harness is not necessary in wingfoiling, as the wing’s design allows for direct hand control without the need for a harness hook.

It is possible to ride with a harness though. 

Most riders don’t need a harness, however, some riders do prefer to use one. For beginners it’s not needed.

Local regulations may apply, so it’s essential to be aware of specific rules and obtain permits if required.

In some areas it’s wise to become member of a surfing or sailing federation, as it can give you benefits about insurance, rescue and so on.

Yes, a wingfoil can be used for both wind foiling (wingfoiling) and SUP foiling (stand-up paddle foiling) with different board setups.

Using foot straps is neither mandatory nor necessary to go wingfoiling. Most beginner riders don’t use foot straps and most intermediate riders use none, only one or two.
Advanced riders tend to use footstraps and they are definately needed if you want to start making jumps.

High-aspect foils have longer, narrower wings, offering higher speeds and efficiency, while low-aspect foils have shorter, wider wings for greater stability and manoeuvrability.

Consider your weight, wind conditions, and skill level when selecting the appropriate wing size. Generally, larger wings are suitable for lighter winds and beginners, while smaller wings are used in stronger winds and for more experienced riders. But wing size and board size is also a very personal thing, depending on your preference and the conditions of your surf spot. 

It works very well to just try out different set-ups as you build your wingfoil quiver. Many surf brands go to surf spots and let riders test their gear.

Wingfoiling is a different sport from windsurfing. The differences are that a wingfoiler stands on a board and holds an inflated wing in his or her hand, without a mast. Also, a wingfoiler wants to fly over the water on a foil. A windsurfer has a rigid mast and boom that are connected to the board.
