About Kornwerderzand: historical significance
Kornwerderzand is a location with historical significance, situated at the eastern end of the Afsluitdijk, a major dam and causeway in the Netherlands. Built in the early 1930s, the Afsluitdijk was a monumental engineering project aimed at preventing flooding from the Zuiderzee, a saltwater inlet of the North Sea. Kornwerderzand hosts a set of sluices and locks that control the water levels between the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea. During World War II, it was also the site of a military defense line.
Over the years, Kornwerderzand has transformed from a purely functional structure into a recreational area where water sports enthusiasts, including wingfoilers, gather to enjoy the unique wind and water conditions created by this man-made marvel.
