The burgeoning sport of wing foiling is all about merging the thrill of flight with the rhythm of the waves. Few places in Germany offer as diverse and inviting a playground for this exhilarating activity as Fehmarn. Affectionately known as the “Sunshine Island”, Fehmarn has steadily evolved into a hotspot for wing foiling, thanks to its consistent winds, varied coastlines, and striking landscapes. For those exploring wingfoil Fehmarn adventures, here’s what awaits you.
Wingfoil Fehmarn: beginner spots
Let’s dive into a couple of spots that are good for beginners.
Burgersee
In the southern part of the island, you will find a protected bay called Burgersee. This lake-like piece of water has a couple of great spots where you can learn and progress in a protected environment. The Burgersee offers a serene environment shielded from the stronger winds and waves of the open sea. Its tranquil waters provide a safe haven for newcomers to learn the ropes of wing foiling without the intimidation of large waves.
Here are a couple of them:
- Burgstaken (you can park here)
- Wulfener hals (here is a windsurf center also), you can park at the camping and buy a day ticket
Lemkenhaven
Just a stone’s throw away from Lemkenhafen, a quaint bay offers another sheltered spot. The bay’s predictable conditions are perfect for practicing transitions, tacks, and jibes, making it a favorite among both novices and intermediate wing foilers. This is at the west part of the island where you find the bay of Lemkenhaven.
There are good conditions to be semi-protected by a half-open bay:

Basically, because the island is round and has many bays and shapes, you can wingfoil at any place with any wind direction. Just be sure you don't go to a beach where the wind is offshore, as it will blow you away from your starting point.
