Zuidlaardermeer, also known as the Lake of Zuidlaren, stretches northwest of the charming village of Zuidlaren. It extends southward from the former municipality of Hoogezand-Sappemeer and spans across the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe. This picturesque lake, with origins dating back 5,000-8,000 years, owes its existence to the river Hunze.
The river Hunze plays a pivotal role in the lake’s ecosystem, feeding it from the southeast and flowing out to the north as the Drentsche Diep. Zuidlaardermeer may be predominantly shallow, with an average depth of about 3 feet, but certain areas, like the nautical channels, offer greater depths.
