If you like to travel around and wing foil on different locations, you are faced with the issue of how to transport your board. You can store your gear in the car and you can use one of the wingfoil roof carriers that are out there. On this page we go into the details.
There are different options you can choose from. You can decide between a rigid and an inflatable board, to start with. An inflatable board has the advantage that it normally fits in the trunk of a mid-sized car. A rigid board can sometimes be stored inside the car (if you put the back seat down) but not in all cars and situations.
In case of a rigid board, taking the board on top of the roof of your car may be your only option. In that case, you can decide to invest in a rigid roof rack that you can mount on your car, and put the typical foam rolls on it that you use to protect your board. But a roof rack is a big, clunky thing to have laying around in your storage for the rest of the year.
On this page, we go through two interesting and popular options for carrying your wing foil board on top of your car that do not require a big, clunky, rigid roof rack.
Option one: inflatable roof rack
The HandiRack is a universal, inflatable, soft roof rack that can be used for transporting kayaks, canoes, surf boards and sups on top of almost any car. It’s a good version of the wingfoil roof carriers as it’s easy to store and to set up.
How does it work?
- You lay the roof rack elements on the roof of car and strap it tight.
- Using the airpump (this is included in the package), you inflate the rack.
- You put your item on top of the rack and strap it to the rack.
- You are done!

The HandiRack is a great alternative to the typical foam rolls that you put on your car.
This innovative system is anchored to your vehicle and acts like a rigid roof rack, but with the benefits of it being inflatable. It’s a very popular wingfoil roof carriers.
The benefits of the HandiRack:
- The inflatable bars protect your load and your car on the move.
- You can install it on the car in just 5 to 10 minutes.
- It’s extremely stable, due to the inflation process which creates a secure connection between the car and the rack.
- You can stow it anywhere as it deflates.
- It’s compatible with bare roofs, roof rails and cars without roof rails, as well as panoramic (glass) roofs.
- Each section comes with 5 metal D-shape anchor points.
- It can carry up to 175 LBS (79 Kilograms) of load!

Option 2: Non-inflatable soft roof rack
The HeyTrip Universal soft roof rack is also an option if you don’t want a rigid, bulky roof rack. It does not require any pumping because it’s not inflatable. That makes is a bit less small when storing, but also less work to set it up on your car.
