When diving into the world of wingfoiling, one of the decisions you’ll face is whether to use wingfoil foot straps. While the decision is highly individual, understanding the pros and cons can guide you to make an informed choice. Footstraps are adjustable bindings attached to the wingfoil board that the rider can slip their feet into. These straps provide a point of connection between the rider and the board, much like bindings in snowboarding.
When it comes to wingfoiling, equipment choices can significantly impact your experience on the water. One of those decision is whether to embrace footstraps. This wingfoil footstraps guide aims to shed light on this topic, helping both beginners and seasoned riders make an informed choice.
Foot straps and wingfoil: in short
The decision to use wingfoil foot straps boils down to personal preference, riding style, and the conditions in which you mostly ride. Beginners might initially find it easier to learn without footstraps to freely adjust foot position. As they progress, they can decide whether foot straps align with their riding goals.
For those undecided, some boards offer adjustable footstrap options, allowing riders to experiment and determine what feels best for them. As with many aspects of wingfoiling, the key is to find what works best for you and ensures a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.

Reasons to use foot straps
- Better Control: Wingfoil foot straps offer better control over the board, especially in choppy conditions or when performing high-speed maneuvers.
- Enhanced Maneuvers: For riders looking to perform jumps, spins, and other aerial tricks, footstraps provide the necessary grip to keep the board attached to their feet.
- Security in Strong Winds: In gusty conditions, footstraps can help keep the board under the rider, preventing it from getting away during wipeouts or sudden gusts.
- Improved Foot Positioning: Footstraps can help ensure your feet are in the optimal position, especially important when learning to foil or transitioning from tacks and gybes.
Beginner riders: no straps
For those who start wingfoiling, or just start getting on the foil, riding without wingfoil foot straps is a good option. It allows you to move your feet on the board as you look for your balance and optimal position.
Also it allows you to fall without hurting your ankle, as your feet are not tight to the board.

Riding with one foot strap
Many advanced riders mount two foot straps but regularly only use one of them while riding.
They put their front foot in the strap for more stability and leave the back foot out for surfing. You can see so in this photo.
They use both straps when they make a jump.
Intermediate riders and beginners
For intermediate riders, a single foot strap in the front may be helpful for more stability. It gives you a reference on where to put the front foot.
Also it provides a bit more connection with the board while having the freedom to move your back foot if needed.

Jumping
For jumping, both feet in the straps are a must. It ensures the board is where you want it to be, you will land as you want and you control the process.
Reasons to ride strapless (without foot straps)
- Freedom and Flexibility: Riding strapless (without wingfoil foot straps) offers more freedom to move your feet around the board. This flexibility can be beneficial, especially in light wind conditions or when adjusting balance during maneuvers.
- Ease of Bailout: Without footstraps, it’s easier to quickly bail out or jump off the board during a wipeout, potentially reducing the risk of injury.
- Natural Feel: Some riders feel a closer, more organic connection to the board and the water when riding strapless. It can also resemble traditional surfing more closely.
- Adaptability to Waves: For those who like to ride waves on their foil, riding strapless can allow for smoother transitions and turns, similar to traditional wave riding.
Using windsurf foot straps for wingfoil
The obvious thing to do if you want to mount footstraps on your wingfoil board, is to contact your board supplier and purchase them there. This way, you ensure that the compatibility is optimal and you minimise the risk of damaging your board when mounting the footstraps. However, you can also use windsurf foot straps if you prefer that. Many brands have specific screws and fitting, so make sure that the ones you have on your foot strap are the ones you can use on the board. We recommend to use the footstraps that the provider of the board recommends.
